ANNUAL REPORT OF INDUSTRIAL FISHERIES ALUMNI ASSOCIATION FOR THE YEAR 2010-11

I have great pleasure in placing before the members, on behalf of the Executive Committee of the Industrial Fisheries Alumni Association the Annual Report  for the year 2010- 11

 

The activities of the Alumni Association started with The Annual Alumni Meeting of on 15 August 2010 in the Seminar hall of the School of Industrial Fisheries.  Dr. K.Gopakumar, Former Deputy Director General (Fisheries), ICAR was the chief guest of the day.  The inaugural session was chaired by Dr. B. Madhusoodana Kurup, Director, School of Industrial Fisheries. Sh. K.G Lawrence, Regional President, SEAI was the guest of honour. The meeting started with the house offering homage to Late Dr. T.S Gopalakrishna Iyer, former Joint Director, CIFT who has significantly contributed in molding a generation of Industrial Fisheries students for career in fisheries. Sh. Edwin Joseph, President of the Alumni Association welcomed the gathering followed by presentation of Annual Report by the Secretary, Dr. George Ninan. Dr. Madhusoodana Kurup delivered the Presidential Address. Dr. Gopakumar in his inaugural address talked about the role of alumni association in nurturing and developing the alma mater. This was followed by honoring the alumni who have excelled in professional and academic fields. Dr. Shahul Hameed, Dr. C.T Samuel Former Directors, School of Industrial Fisheries offered felicitations.Dr. Leela Edwin, Vice President, Industrial Fisheries Alumni Association proposed the vote of thanks.

 

The Annual General Meeting which followed reviewed the performance of the Alumni Association in 2009-10. President Sh. Edwin Joseph welcomed the members and briefly mentioned the activities of Alumni Association in the reporting year. Dr. Harikrishnan, Treasurer presented the statement of accounts for the year 2009-10 which was approved by the House. This was followed by discussions on issues raised by the members and   elections. The AGM has unanimously agreed to extend the term of the following office bearers for 2010-11.

ACTIVITIES DURING THE YEAR 2010-11

 

Executive Committee Meetings

 

The Executive Committee of the Alumni Association met nine times during 2010-2011 to discuss and take action on various issues. 

 

New Year Celebrations

 

The Industrial Fisheries Alumni Association co-hosted the New Year Celebrations with the School of Industrial Fisheries.  Dr. Godfrey Louis, Pro Vice Chancellor of Cochin University of Science and Technology has inaugurated New Year Celebrations 2011 and delivered the New Year message on 4th January, 2011.

 

Farewell to Sh. N.K Dasan

 

Mr. N.K. Dasan, net maker in the School of Industrial Fisheries, since  1981 has retired from service on 31-3-2011. Alumni members participated in a party organized by Mr. Dasan at the school of Industrial Fisheries on 16th March. In the farewell meeting President of the Alumni association felicitated Sh. Dasan on behalf of alumni.

 

Felicitation to Dr. Madhusoodana Kurup, Vice Chancellor, KUFOS

 

A meeting was jointly organized by IFAA & SIF to felicitate Dr. Madhusoodana Kurup, Director, SIF who has been appointed Vice Chancellor, KUFOS at the SIF on March 16

Dr. Ramachandran welcomed the gathering. Dr. Ramachandran Thekkedathu, Vice Chancellor & Dr. Godfrey Louis, Pro-Vice Chancellor, of CUSAT and Former Directors of the School has felicitated Dr. Kurup. The Vice Chancellor presented memento to the incumbent VC and Sh. Edwin Joseph; President of the Alumni Association read the citation on behalf of the alumni and the School of Industrial Fisheries.

 

Alumni Academic Back Strapping programme

 

Alumni Academic Back strapping programme started last year to supplement and update the knowledge base of students continued this year too. The following lectures were conducted by the alumni members at the School of Industrial Fisheries in 2010-2011.

 

  • Fish mince based products – Dr. George Ninan, Senior scientist, CIFT, Cochin.
  • Packaging of fish & fishery products – Dr. Bindu J, Senior scientist, CIFT, Cochin.
  • Value added product options from deep sea resources – Dr. Girija S, Director, NIFPHATT, Cochin.
  • Application of refrigeration in the Fisheries Industry – Mr. Joseph Zacharia, MD, M/s Innovative Seafood Solutions.
  • Food Analysis – Mrs. Beena Tilak, Inerfield laboratories, Cochin.
  • Alternate materials for boat building – Dr. Leela Edwin, Principal scientist &Head FT division, CIFT, Cochin

 

 

Industrial Fisheries Alumni Association Website.

 

The website of the Alumni association is unique in the sense that it is the most active site among the very few alumni websites in CUSAT. So far we have 175 members registered in our website which has representation from all the batches right up to the 33rd batch. The website regularly posts the news and events related to the alumni activities and the achievements of School of Industrial Fisheries and alumni members. This year twenty such postings have been made in the website. The website has a message board where placement opportunities, general discussion and TAG questions are posted.

 

Web News Letter - A very attractively designed newsletter is published in the alumni web site which carries the latest and important news in the fisheries field worldwide and the abstracts of the alumni academic back strapping programme for the benefit of all members. The executive decided to make the newsletter multi page.

 

Technology Advisory Group (TAG)

 

TAG is constituted from the alumni members with experience and expertise in various fields.  TAG aims at providing assistance and solutions to the students, alumni and industry on education, research, projects, professional matters and involvement in social projects. TAG functions by direct participation and through the alumni web site. Students and alumnus from any part of the world can post their request to TAG group on their problem on the web and an e-mail alert is send to the TAG regarding the posting of the request and TAG members responds with solutions.

 

 

Industry – Academic interaction

 

Alumni Association facilitates the interaction between the school and trade by inviting trade and industry leaders to the campus and initiating discussion between the industry, alumni and the school on issues of importance to the trade and tries to find solutions through discussions and study. The industry is also now looking to the school and alumni as a reliable source of information. This helps to build a good rapport with the industry, which helps the students and alumni in their job prospects.

 

Participation in Seminars, Symposiums and Workshops

 

Alumni associates with the alma mater to conduct seminars, symposiums and workshops of significance to the academics, industry and trade.

 

Preparing students for in - plant training.

 

The M.Sc Industrial Fisheries students have to undergo in plant training in seafood units as part of their curriculum during the last semester. Alumni members with experience in the seafood industry prepare the students for effective in plant training by giving them the required orientation.

 

Placement services.

 

Alumni association offers placement service for the benefit of the students and alumni. Alumni members world over inform the opportunities and this is intimated through the group mailing system as well as posted in the placement services of the web site. A web generated e-mail is send to members regarding the postings.

 

Recognizing achievements of the students and alumni

 

Achievements of students and alumni in education, research and in their respective professional areas are appreciated and informed for the benefit of all members. This is done by the group mailing system and web site postings. The alumni members who had excelled in professional and academic fields are felicitated during the Annual General Meeting of the Association from 2010 onwards. In 2010, eight alumni members were felicitated for their Professional and career achievements and eight for their academic achievements. They are:

The year 2010- 11 has been active year for the Association and we believe that we had done a fair measure of justice to our roles in various capacities. This would not have happened but for the support of our alumni members who, we hope are magnanimous in forgiving our shortcomings. Finally a word of special thanks to our President, Sh. Edwin Joseph, who guided us with dedication and determination.

 

 

We wish you the very best in your personal and professional life. We sincerely hope that our Alumni association will scale to greater heights of achievements in the coming years.

The Inaugural session was followed by a talk on “Barriers for Effective Communication” by Dr. Oommen Mathew, Regional Director, IMG. Sh. Nithin, Secretary of Industrial Fisheries Association proposed the vote of thanks.

 

The Annual General Meeting which followed reviewed the performance of the Alumni Association in 2008-09. President Sh. Edwin Joseph welcomed the members and briefly mentioned the activities of Alumni Association in 2008-09. New Year Celebrations

 

The New Year celebrations 2010 were held at the School of Industrial fisheries on January 4 th. Dr. Boopendranath, Principal Scientist, CIFT was the chief guest who gave the New Year Message. The function was presided over by Dr. B. Madhusoodana Kurup, Director, School of Industrial Fisheries. President Sh. Edwin Joseph welcomed the gathering and Secretary Dr. George Ninan proposed vote of thanks.

 

Alumni Academic Back strapping for our Alma mater, School of Industrial Fisheries

 

Alumni Academic Back strapping programme was launched in October 2009.This is a novel programme envisaged as year long lecture series encompassing the diverse fields of Fisheries by the experts in the field drawn from the alumni members for the benefit of the students of our alma mater and also for alumni members. This programme aims to supplement and update their knowledge base on the subject and presently being held based on a schedule drawn in consultation with the school of industrial fisheries .A resource base is prepared from the alumni members volunteering for the programme. 

 

The following lectures were conducted by the alumni members at the school of industrial fisheries in 2009-2010.

 

  • Marine fisheries Statistics of Kerala –Smt. Saira Bhanu- Joint Director of Fisheries.  

 

  • HACCP Principles and Implementation -  Smt. Anita K. Joseph,QA Manager, Choice Canning Co, Cochin.

 

  • The nutrition facts label  -   An overview –  Mr. T.N. Venugopal, Alliance Maritime (P) Ltd, Kochi

 

  • The Regualtion of the European Union on IUU Fishing and Exports of Fish and Fishery Products from India.- Mr.K.M.Shahjahan.

 

  • Fishery byproducts Waste utilization – Dr. Zynudheen A.A., Senior Scientist,  CIFT, Cochin

 

Role of Industrial Fisheries Alumni website in fostering alumni activities.

 

The Alumni association has a very active website. 181 members covering all the 33 batches have registered in the website.There are regular postings of news events of the alumni activities and the achievements of School of Industrial Fisheries and alumni members. This year twenty such postings have been made in the website. The website has a message board where placement opportunities, general discussion and TAG questions are posted.

 

A news letter is published in the alumni web site which carries the abstracts of the alumni academic back strapping programme for the benefit of all members.

TAG members conducted training programme for Fisherwomen cooperative on the invitation from Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Cochin under an NAIP project. The training programme was conducted free of cost as a part of the association’s social commitment to our less privileged brethren. Sh.Jacob Taliath, Sh.Venugopal,  Sh. Joseph Zachriah and Sh. Edwin Joseph particiapted in the training programme.

Recently Cusat has initiated steps to bring together the Alumni associations in the University and form an apex body. It is heartening to note that our President Sh. Edwin Joseph was elected as the Vice President of Cusat Alumni Association.

 

The President, Office bearers and the executive members of the Association wish to thank the Director, Faculty, Students and the administrative staff of the School of Industrial Fisheries for their wholehearted support in all our ventures. The year 2009- 10 has been active year for the Association and we believe that we had done a fair measure of justice to our roles in various capacities. This would not have happened but for the support of our alumni members who, we hope are magnanimous in forgiving our shortcomings. Finally a word of special thanks to our President, Sh. Edwin Joseph, who despite all personal inconveniences guided us with dedication and determination.

 

We are happy to note that our alumni association programmes were  given a good coverage by the National Daily “The Hindu”.
